Making climbing topos

Who can make topos?

What do you need to create a topo

Last updated on 09 Feb, 2026

At 27 Crags, our mission is to document every single climbing crag in the world. From the very beginning, we knew this would be a massive effort—one that can only succeed with help from climbers everywhere. That’s where you, and every other climber on 27 Crags, come in.

While many of our topo authors are local climbing developers or guidebook authors, most are simply climbing enthusiasts just like you. The important part? Anyone can make topos.

Topos can be created by:

  • A single individual, or

  • A group of climbers working together

Planning to make a topo outside your local area?

If you’re planning to create a topo for an area where you don’t live, you're not very familiar with the local topo sitation, or that you haven’t developed yourself, please get in touch with Tim from our team at tim@27crags.com.

Tim can:

  • Check the local topo situation

  • Help avoid duplicate work

  • Answer any questions you might have before getting started

Check out our guide on how to make your own topos here.
